Day 11 | Ontario Science Centre and Hockey Game

Today was the last full day of the trip. We felt gloomy since the trip had basically come to a close. Due to this minor setback, none of us felt like waking up! Corey and I slept until 11:00 AM. Brian woke up at 9:00 AM to get breakfast while Eddie and James were up all night watching Toronto Maple Leafs games. They were reticent this morning, and took Advil due to their splitting headaches. We all went and had brunch in the lobby. We swiftly grabbed some croissants, coffee and other food to take back to our rooms. Brian and James began packing their winter apparel and toiletries while Cory and I finished our bagels. We walked around aimlessly until room service came and set our beds properly. We went out into the 22° Fahrenheit weather and walked onto the front porch of the Museum. We were dressed appropriately in cardigans, sweaters and winter coats. Eddie caught our cab and told him to bring us to the Ontario Science Center. We drove for an hour, in and out of passageways on local streets and finally reached our destination. The cold felt like needle on my skin but it weared off once we had entered the warm center.

We paid fifteen dollars and continued to final payment. After thanking the cashier, we went to the exhibit we had came for, Candy Unwrapped. This exhibit reveals the secrets behind the chemistry, biology, physiology and psychology of candy and how it affects our body through interactive process videos, as well as a state-of-the-art IMAX documentary about candy.

The museum tour lasted several hours, so we were kept occupied on the waning hours of the trip. After the tour we exited and caught a cab back to the hotel. We grabbed our rental car and our hockey gear. Eddie put on his camouflage Carolina Hurricanes jersey and the rest of us grabbed blue shirts to show support for the home team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

We went back down to the parking lot and hopped into the car. Eddie drove us the game, and was hyped to see a hockey game somewhere other than North Carolina. We purchased some food from Harvey's, a fast food burger chain, which was a few miles west of the Air Canada Centre. We got a few burgers and drove to the stadium to tailgate like southerners. Normally in North Carolina, the temperature is not to cold, but it was really cold in Toronto. We sat in the car eating our burgers instead of outside while listening to the pre-game show.

When the stadium workers opened the doors for the fans to enter the stadium, we went through the metal detector and showed our tickets. We climbed up the stairs following Eddie, the self-proclaimed hockey expert (we called him the hockey nerd), to section 301. When we showed our tickets to the man at the top of the section, he told us to have a nice time and we climbed down to row eight.

By the time we settled into our seats, half of the stadium had been filled. We watched the two teams warm up and Eddie bored us with useless information. Finally, at seven, the lights went dark and someone sang the Canadian and American national anthems.

The puck dropped and the game was underway. For the most part, Brian, James, and I were not to interested in the game, but Corey was mostly interested in the game and Eddie was actually entirely focused on something for once. The Blue Jackets seemed to be outplayed by the Maple Leafs throughout the first period, but they only scored once.

During the intermission we grabbed some food from the nearby concession stand. Eddie told us tales of his hockey days and of the crazy games he saw before.Image result for toronto maple leafs vs columbus blue jackets o canada

In the second period, the Blue Jackets scored twice, making the game 2-1. There were two penalties called, one for each team. Columbus scored on their power play, which was the game tier. We sat through the second intermission and watched the stats on the jumbotron and the zambonis clear the ice. Eddie was talking to the guy next to him about North Carolina while the rest of us played on our phones. When the third period started, everyone was on his/her feet. The Maple Leafs scored four times; the last goal was an empty netter.

When we left the stadium, all the Toronto fans were yelling and high fiving. As we drove back to the hotel, we talked about the best moments of the game. Corey liked the enthusiasm when the Maple Leaf's won, while Eddie liked the entire thing as a whole. We were glad we went because it was a good time for us to bond as friends. We were not hungry since we spent money on burgers. We were all exhausted by the time we entered our room and we all fell asleep immediately.
